Brooks Pierce Attorneys Present Webinar on the CARES Act for Durham Tech Small Business Center
Brooks Pierce attorneys Melissa Weaver, Steve LaSota and Josh Lingerfelt recently presented a webinar hosted by Durham Technical Community College’s Small Business Center on navigating the CARES Act.
The webinar, “Navigating the CARES Act,” provided insight on the new law and its provisions for businesses, including: the Payment Protection Program (PPP) and loan forgiveness, tax credits and changes to employee benefit plan rules that provide relief to participants and plan sponsors.
The Small Business Center (SBC) at Durham Tech provides startup and existing entrepreneurs (for profit and nonprofit) with the information and tools needed to develop business ideas to become viable, sustainable, profitable, and successful. Through the services provided by the SBC, entrepreneurs receive assistance with several business areas including, but not limited to, business planning, marketing, legal, accounting and financial management.
Weaver has practiced employee benefits law for 30 years. Having previously served as an in-house attorney, she has a unique understanding of the needs of business owners regarding the design and implementation of employee benefits and deferred compensation plans.
As a real estate development attorney and a former general counsel for community and regional banks, LaSota is well-versed in handling a wide variety of commercial transactions. With over 15 years of experience, he has handled extensive work in retail financial services and advised developers and lenders on nearly every aspect of commercial and residential real estate development and disposition.
Lingerfelt is a transactional attorney, focusing on federal income tax issues related to the structuring and formation of investment funds, REIT transactions and compliance, securities offerings, debt financings, mergers and acquisitions, and complex domestic and cross-border transactions. He is admitted to practice in New York and is currently seeking admission to the North Carolina State Bar.
