Ed Turlington and Matt Bales Speak to North Carolina Board of Science, Technology & Innovation

Brooks Pierce partner Ed Turlington and government relations advisor Matt Bales recently spoke at a meeting of the North Carolina Board of Science, Technology & Innovation on Feb. 11. Turlington and Bales provided an update on state government affairs matters of interest to board members, including the upcoming April 2020 session of the General Assembly.

The board, which was created by the General Assembly in 1963, encourages, promotes and supports scientific, engineering and industrial research applications in the state. Its membership includes Gov. Roy Cooper, two cabinet secretaries and business and university leaders from across North Carolina.

Turlington’s practice focuses on representing clients before North Carolina government in a variety of practice areas including education, environment, finance, health care, technology and transportation. He has served as state government counsel to the NC Tech Association for almost 15 years. Prior to joining the Brooks Pierce, Turlington served as chief of staff to both the governor and lieutenant governor of North Carolina, as special assistant/counsel to a United States senator and as a national advisor to three presidential candidates.

Bales provides public policy advice and legislative strategy to clients in a variety of industries. A former political strategist, he is well-versed in the intricacies of North Carolina politics and understands how to best communicate his clients’ interests to legislators, state regulatory agencies and members of the executive branch.
