Brooks Pierce Attorneys to Speak About Digital Marketing Law at 2016 Internet Summit
Three attorneys from leading North Carolina law firm Brooks Pierce will speak at the 2016 Internet Summit in Raleigh on Nov. 16. Charles Marshall, David Smyth and Thomas Varnum will speak about the legal implications of digital marketing and best practices marketers should adopt to avoid legal issues.
The presentation, titled “Digital Marketing ‘Blues,’” follows an imaginary animated character named Mr. Blue who makes a series of legal missteps in the digital marketing world. These mistakes include violating online contest rules, ignoring data privacy laws, and contacting customers without their consent – all errors marketers and business owners unknowingly make on a daily basis. Marshall, Smyth and Varnum will guide the audience through these common blunders and offer advice on how to best comply with laws.
Marshall, a partner in the Raleigh office, has a diverse practice involving digital media, data privacy issues, government relations, and complex business litigation. He advises clients on matters related to digital and social media, including copyright law and the growing number of state and federal regulations related to online marketing and privacy. He has also counseled numerous companies on how to respond to a data breach. Marshall is a frequent speaker on digital marketing, privacy and technology and contributes to Brooks Pierce’s Digital Media and Data Privacy blog.
Smyth, also a partner in Brooks Pierce’s Raleigh office, focuses his practice on data security, securities law and government investigations. Smyth is a widely read author and presenter on issues related to privacy, corporate compliance, and securities regulation. He frequently shares his legal insight on two Brooks Pierce blogs: Digital Media and Data Privacy, and Cady Bar the Door.
Varnum, a partner in the Wilmington office, represents businesses in a wide range of digital marketing, entertainment, intellectual property and litigation matters. He is also an avid supporter of the film and television industries in North Carolina, and currently chairs the Board of Trustees for the Cucalorus Film Foundation, the producer of the annual Cucalorus Film Festival.
