Jill Wilson, a partner at Brooks Pierce, was profiled by the Triad Business Journal as one of its “Outstanding Woman in Business” for 2018.

Wilson was selected for both her success in education law and her contributions to the community. Cited among her professional successes were winning a precedent-setting case regarding the disproportionate funding of charter schools and successfully representing the school boards of Guilford and Durham counties in their lawsuit against changes to North Carolina state law regarding teacher tenure. She has also been actively involved with many nonprofits, including the Green Hill Center for North Carolina Art, and serves as a mentor and coach to many young lawyers.

When asked about a moment she felt empowered by someone and how she learned from the experience, Wilson said: “I represented Greensboro City Board of Education when I was in my mid-30s and got to argue the legality of the merger of the three Guilford County school systems through the superior and appellate courts on behalf of the state and the city boards, closely watched by the deputy attorney general, Eddie Speas, and my senior partner, Jim Williams (two of the best trial attorneys in North Carolina). That experience was a tremendous confidence booster.”

In the article, Wilson also offered advice to women just starting their careers, making the business case for why women should hold more corporate leadership positions.
