Brooks Pierce Partner Mentioned in Triangle Business Journal Article
Joey Ponzi, a partner at Brooks Pierce, was quoted in a Triangle Business Journal article on the lawsuit filed by the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority (CFPUA) against Chemours and DuPont. Ponzi is a member of the Brooks Pierce legal team representing CFPUA.
The suit alleges that since 1970 Chemours and DuPont have been discharging the toxic chemical GenX into the Cape Fear River. It goes on to state that the “defendants’ strategy amounts to a toxic chemical shell game, played at the expense of the lower Cape Fear River and those who use it for potable water.”
CFPUA is researching treatment methods to remove GenX from its water, and has partnered with UNC-Wilmington to identify any related contaminants in the Cape Fear River. Currently they’re providing a free water filling station sourced from underground aquifers.
“Our interest in the lawsuit is secondary,” says Ponzi. “What we’re really interested in doing is addressing the problem, which is contamination in the Cape Fear River.”
