Elizabeth Spainhour Discusses Data Privacy with Business North Carolina

Brooks Pierce partner Elizabeth Spainhour recently participated on Business North Carolina’s annual digital privacy and security roundtable discussion, which was held in Brooks Pierce’s Raleigh office.

The participants discussed where North Carolina stands in terms of data privacy and regulation, the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and the need for data privacy compliance within organizations.

Spainhour explained that many companies are beginning to think proactively about privacy, in addition to reacting when there is a data breach.

“I work with some smaller and medium-sized companies, and I think for a long time, privacy was how they responded to a security breach,” said Spainhour. “It was very incident-based. I think for many of these companies it’s evolving to focus more on compliance.”
