Will Quick Discusses Digital Privacy and Cybersecurity in Business North Carolina
Brooks Pierce attorney Will Quick recently discussed online privacy and security issues as part of an annual roundtable discussion on the topic hosted by Business North Carolina. An edited version of the discussion was included in the November issue of the magazine.
The discussion covered several topics, including how businesses and individuals view cybersecurity, different types of cybercrime, privacy protection and recommended parameters for data collection and storage.
The Brooks Pierce data privacy team, which consists of 13 attorneys including Quick, counsels clients about issues such as data collection, privacy policies and data breaches. In Business North Carolina, Quick emphasized why it’s crucial that small to mid-sized businesses consider data privacy, including being prepared for a data breach.
“Many small businesses can’t afford a cybersecurity expert. Many are running 10-year-old systems that haven’t been updated or had software patches installed. That makes it near impossible to assess their risks or identify when a breach has happened. Know your customer notification requirements before a breach, because they are different in every state that you do business. Every company should have a data privacy task force that includes top executives, IT folks, human resources and representation from every facet of the business,” said Quick.
