Brooks Pierce partners Ed Turlington and Bob Saunders provided a legislative update on August 8 at the annual meeting of the Recycling Association of North Carolina (RANC) in Asheville. RANC is the statewide trade association for metal and materials recyclers, an industry that employs 5,000 people across the state and which annually recycles tons of metal, plastic, and vehicles for reuse.

Brooks Pierce has represented RANC since 2012. Turlington leads government affairs work for RANC in support of policies to grow the industry and increase materials recycling. Saunders serves as counsel to the association and advises it on board of directors and legal issues.

Having served in key leadership positions in state and federal government, Turlington uses this experience to serve clients in a variety of industries, including technology, health care, transportation and education. In his practice, he works to impact government policy through interactions with senior government officials, regulatory and administrative agencies, and drafting and building support for legislation.

Saunders is a tax and business lawyer with extensive experience in the nonprofit sector. He counsels primarily tax-exempt organizations, both charitable and non-charitable, on a multitude of federal and state tax controversy matters, estate planning, and tax-exempt financing.

Brooks Pierce’s skilled and respected government affairs team includes both attorneys and public policy professionals – many of whom have served in federal, state or local governments. We understand how governmental agencies work, and help clients seek appropriate solutions from agencies and lawmakers. We work with all levels of government to accomplish our client’s objectives.
