Brooks Pierce mourns the passing of Matthew Tynan, our partner and friend. “Matt was a brilliant lawyer. His analysis of complicated legal issues earned him the respect of clients, judges and foes. He had the most marvelous wit which he often deployed at work to put things into perspective,” said Brooks Pierce Managing Partner Reid Phillips.

Matt joined Brooks Pierce in 2015. He focused his practice in business litigation and environmental law and advised clients on a diverse range of energy law issues and environmental regulatory matters. He had a deep background in energy regulation and environmental law, and has advised clients in matters before the North Carolina Utilities Commission, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the Department of Energy, and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. Matt also advised clients in disputes relating to the purchase and sale of renewable energy credits and in disputes relating to the interconnection of independent solar power generation resources.

He was selected by his peers for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America© "Ones to Watch" for Environmental Law (2024-2025).

Matt received a dual law and environmental management degree from Duke University School of Law and the Nicholas School of the Environment, and was awarded a bachelor’s degree summa cum laude in engineering physics from the University of Pittsburgh.

Please join us in our condolences to Matt’s family and all who loved him.
