With great sadness, Brooks Pierce announces the passing of Randy Tinsley, our partner and friend. Randy joined the firm in 1987 and had a storied career in environmental law. With his background as a scientist, before he became an attorney, his work with water quality, water rights and wetlands matters was special and lauded by clients, colleagues and legal industry publications. His advocacy over the years for businesses, local governments and other organizations to achieve their goals in environmental compliance and litigation was tireless even during challenging times. “Randy was noted for his practical, intelligent insights into any and every kind of problem,” said Reid Phillips. “He was a friend to everyone he knew. We miss him.”
For more than 35 years, Randy was a member of the North Carolina Bar Association’s Environment, Energy & Natural Resources Law Section and Administrative Law Section, and served as a council member and committee chairman. He was also a member of the American Water Works Association and the American Water Resources Association. In 1995, he graduated from the Triad Leadership Network. Randy also was co-chairman of the Town of Summerfield Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee from 2007-2010.
Randy was recognized by Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business for Environmental Law (2008-2023). He was selected by his peers for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America© in Environmental Law and Environmental Litigation (2005-2024), and notably ranked as Greensboro Litigation—Environmental “Lawyer of the Year” (2015, 2017) and Greensboro Environmental Law “Lawyer of the Year” (2022). He was recognized by his peers for inclusion in Business North Carolina's "Legal Elite" in Environmental Law (2007, 2014, 2023).
Randy graduated with distinction from Ohio State University and received his M.S. from Virginia Tech. In 1987, he was awarded his law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law.
Please join us in our condolences to Randy’s family and all who loved him.
