Bill Cary to Join DENR as General Counsel

04.08.2012

Effective April 30, 2012, our partner Bill Cary will depart Brooks Pierce in order to accept an appointment by the Governor as General Counsel of the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). We anticipate that Bill will return to Brooks Pierce at the end of the current administration.

We support Bill in this public service, and we share the Governor’s confidence in his abilities.

Our clients and friends should know both that we have arrangements in place to ensure that there will be no interruption in legal services to our clients and that Bill’s service as DENR’s general counsel will not affect Brooks Pierce's ability to handle matters involving DENR.

Bill will succeed Mary Penny Thompson, who will become the department's chief deputy secretary upon Manly Wilder's retirement. The general counsel oversees all legal matters for DENR.

While at Brooks Pierce, Bill has represented private, public and government clients in North Carolina on issues related to hazardous waste, wastewater treatment, protection of state and federal water quality laws as well as natural heritage areas and waterfront restoration. He also has extensive experience in legal matters related to labor, employment and construction.

We congratulate Bill on this important appointment and wish him all the best in his time at DENR.
